Sky Blues in the Community have now run 3 successful beginners running courses for women in Coventry in partnership with Run Like a Girl (RLAG) as part of our In It Together project. A typical course costs just £12 for 8 weeks and sees women take part in a structured programme at the War Memorial Park, following the ‘Couch to 5K’ programme.
So far, hundreds of women have benefited from attending the courses – inspiring many to run on a regular basis. Naomi graduated from our beginners course in January and has used it as a spring-board to completing her first 10K race.
Naomi – “I started running on my own back in October last year, as my husband is a keen runner and I really wanted to get fit! Although I enjoyed it I found it hard and was disappointed that I was walking more than running.
Around Christmas my mum saw an advert for a new beginners running group that was starting in Coventry. It was being organised by Run like a Girl (RLAG) and In It Together and asked if I’d go along with her. The first few weeks were hard but it was amazing how quickly we improved and how much we enjoyed it.
I was so happy that we both completed the course and was keen to keep my motivation from slipping. Whilst on holiday I read a book called “Running like a girl” by Alexandra Hemminsley which suggested booking different events so that you have something to train for.
After looking for different events I settled on the Great Manchester Run as it was in 6 weeks time, which gave me plenty of time to prepare. I decided to run for the Alzheimer’s Society as both of my Grandfathers had Alzheimer’s/Dementia. This was a really big motivation for me.
I used a training plan in the Women’s Running magazine and followed that for a few weeks but found that I wasn’t improving as much as I wanted to so I just upped my running distance slightly each time I ran, something that I’d learned from following the RLAG course.
The big day arrived and I was a bag of nerves but excited too. The run was amazing with crowds of people cheering everyone on! I feel so proud to be able to run and am already planning another event!”
Run Like a Girl (RLAG) was set up in 2015, to give women the opportunity to get active through running, in a safe and supportive environment – an ethos that aligns perfectly with the In It Together (IIT) project. Funded by Sport England, IIT is focused on getting women and teenage girls in Coventry active through a variety of sporting activities.
Moving forwards, Sky Blues in the Community (with the support of Run Like a Girl) are looking to set up more and more running groups in Coventry. We also run weekly fitness sessions for women in Coventry who are looking to get active. The weekly In It Together sessions are fun, friendly and FREE – there is no commitment and they take place at community venues across the city. You can view the full timetable HERE.
During the summer months the In It Together project also plans to run “taster” sessions of various sports, these were hugely popular last summer with local women enjoying sessions of rugby, softball and golf.
