BTEC Football and Education
Sky Blues in the Community work in partnership with two local colleges in Coventry and Warwickshire to provide students aged 16-19 an opportunity to study a full-time BTEC course, whilst also representing Coventry City in a professional football club colleges league.
The BTEC sport courses offer those with an interest in working in the sports and leisure industry an opportunity to study a range of topics that will provide students with the skills and experience for a possible career in sport.
Why Choose a Sky Blues in the Community Course
There are lots of people offering football BTEC courses, so what makes the Sky Blues in the Community course different to the other ones on offer?
From a football point of view, the players represent Coventry City in the National Football Youth Development League. This is a league that is only open to BTEC college programmes that are delivered by professional football clubs, which makes it unique. The players wear the Coventry City playing and training kit making them feel part of their local professional football club.
The league itself is affiliated to British Universities and College’s Sport as a governing body and has teams representing Premier League and Football League teams including Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Birmingham City, Reading and Bournemouth.
Many of the teams play their home fixtures at club academy, or first team training facilities, with cup finals taking place on Birmingham City’s St Andrews pitch.
Our coaches are highly qualified UEFA B coaches and above and our BTEC courses link in with other modules and departments at colleges (for example Sport Science), to provide a full wraparound sporting experience as part of the course.
The top quality coaching and backroom support experience, coupled with playing against other professional clubs at high class facilities make the Sky Blues in the Community BTEC courses stand out in terms of a football experience for the players.
From an educational point of view, we see the education as important as the football. Further education is a key time for students when they start to consider what they are interested in as a career.
We feel that students integrating in to a ‘normal’ student life is key for young people. That is why all lectures are delivered at central college campuses, rather than in a room in a football clubhouse. This means that our students integrate with others from a wide variety of courses and enjoy the sociable experience that college life should bring.
Being based at a college campus also means that students receive all the support they need in a key time of their life, including:
- Finance, funding and loans support
- Careers advice
- Job shop
- Health and welfare
- Learning support
- Access to libraries
As well as all of this, we offer students the chance to study coaching qualifications, such as FA Level 1 courses and Sports Leaders UK courses. Sky Blues in the Community also offer an opportunity for students to benefit from sports industry work experience – shadowing our coaches in some of the 200 sport and community sessions that we deliver each week.
From an employment point of view, work experience in the sports industry is vital to getting your foot in the door, so this opportunity significantly enhances your job and career prospects. There may well also be opportunities to gain paid coaching work for us during your time on the course and beyond.
After the course is completed, there are a number of options for direct routes in to higher education with Foundation degree programmes.
We also have an established partnership with a large company that employs qualified football coaches from England to work in American and Australia. Being based at the college means that all students can readily access advice and guidance as to what are the most suitable next steps for the individual.
