The Junior Premier League (JPL) have launched a NEW mini development league in and around Coventry for the 2017/18 season focusing on local grassroot clubs. This season’s U7s & U8s will take place at Blue Coat School, Coventry on a Sunday morning with U9s & U10s at Warwick University on a Saturday morning. These days were selected so it does not interfere with the local Coventry Minor Football Leagues. The whole idea behind the league is to get local players and teams more playing time by offering them the chance to play a second game over the weekend. With Sky Blues in the Community being based in Coventry and having good links with the JPL (with 7 teams in the U10-U16 age groups for the last 5 seasons) we are helping the JPL to spread the word.
The whole idea behind these new leagues initially came about following a meeting the JPL had with Birmingham County FA to discuss the possibility of increasing the opportunities for Mini Soccer teams with the Counties jurisdiction. This was followed by a meeting with Sky Blues in the Community to see if we believed there would be a demand locally for more games and the idea grew from here.
The focus of these leagues will be on supporting players long term development as well as creating an environment where all players can play with a smile on their face. Players will naturally develop in their own time if they are playing and enjoying the game. The games themselves will be played over three periods of 17 minutes and all players involved will have to play in two of the thirds giving them at least 66% game time. There will be no assigned referee for the games however a central coach form either team will manage them game, allowing the players to take more responsibility for game management themselves.
In addition to developing players, the league will work with Sky Blues in the Community and Birmingham County FA to support coaches in their development pathway as a coach. The aim will be to offer additional workshops for parents, managers and coaches to help support and develop the whole game in the Coventry area.
All of the games will take place on a 3G artificial pitch helping to mitigate the interference of bad weather and prevent the disappointment of fixtures being called off. The format will also remove some of the administrative duties for teams such as contacting referees and booking pitches – which will also help keep the costs lower for the team and players taking part.
Any interested clubs can register their interest by clicking on the link below – it is limited to 12 teams per age group.
